Franchise Consulting Companies Vs. Franchise Attorneys
One of the most common questions we get is “what’s the difference between franchise consulting companies and franchise attorneys?” Typically, clients want to know whether there’s truly a difference between the two and if it’s really necessary to hire an experienced Minnesota franchise lawyer, as opposed to a franchise consulting company.
The truth is, there are several differences between the two, though the starkest is that franchise consulting companies solely make money through selling franchises, while franchise lawyers are in the business of helping their clients become as successful as possible. Typically, when a person goes to a franchise consulting company, the company won’t inform them of any of the potential downsides or risks of purchasing a franchise in question–as long as they purchase the franchise, the consulting company makes money.
How to Start a Franchise in Minnesota
As one of the few states that have enacted franchise laws, Minnesota requires you to register your Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) with the Securities Division of the Minnesota Department of Commerce before you may offer or sell a franchise. The initial FDD filing fee is $400. Your FDD registration lasts for one year and requires an annual renewal fee of $200. The annual renewal fee will be $300 if your renewal FDD contains a material change from the prior year.
